Koa Kai "Laulima" Pre Season Race

Coach Scotty "Up In Smoke" Thompson powered his Master Men Crew to a 4th place finish at this weekends "Laulima" Pre-Season Race.

Wind and swirling surf provided Ka Mamalahoe with an interesting day on the ocean as three crews competed in this past Saturday's "Laulima" Pre-Season Race sponsored by Koa Kai Canoe Club.

Once again, the Novice B women continued to gain valuable ocean experience as Lisa Duguran steered her third consecutive open ocean race against a field of all veteran steersman.  Duguran and her crew of Char, Shay, Marisol, Tina and Stacy B., managed a second place finish in the B women division.

A pleasant surprise for Ka Mamalahoe was their Open Mix Crew of Val, Dana, Jake N., Q, Nate and Liz as they overcame a near disastrous crash at the start to come back strong and place 5th in a very tough Open Mix Division.  The mixed crew placed a respectable 6th overall, out of 28 crews.

The Master Men closed out the days events in an all male race field.  The crew, Mike N., Scotty, Frank, Colby, Ted and Randy finished 4th in the Masters Division.

The pre-season continues with weekly races leading up to the start of the regatta season on May 28th.  The next race, the Keahiakahoe Pre-Season Race, will be held on May 13th, in Kaneohe.  Contact Coach Scotty or Denise Higgins for details.  See below for more photos of this weekends race.

"Papa'i Makes its Debut at Alapa Hoe Race"

Ka Mamalahoe's 1st Place Novice B Men Crew strike a pose in front of the new Wa'a, "Papa'i"

Crew: Danny, Q, Curtis, Nate, Adam, Jose

Ka Mamalahoe welcomed it's new wa'a, the "Papa'i",  in style as three crews managed to bring home hardware at the annual Alapa Hoe Pre-Season Race.  The Novice B Men led the charge, placing 1st in their division.  The race also marked the debut of Ka Mamalahoe's Novice B Women, who managed a 3rd place finish with a "true" Novice B crew.  The first and second place crews from Waikiki Beach Boys and Waikiki Yacht Club opted to use "open" (veteran) steersman which is allowed for Novice crews in open ocean races.  The Master Women were next with an overall 2nd place finish in their division.

The Open Mix crew of Leah, Coby, Aimy, Jake K., Frank and Ttbang had their work cut out for them as they ran up against some tough crews, placing 6th in their division.  All in all, the crews were represented well and continue to improve working towards the start of the Regatta season (May 28).   The pre-season rolls on with the next race, the Koa Kai "Laulima" pre-season race,  taking place at at Ke'ehi Lagoon on May 6.  See below for more photos of this weekends crews and race photos.
