2008 PRE-SEASON NEWS

Alapa Hoe Pre-Season Race

Crews crowd the buoy at the half-way point of this weekends Alapa Hoe Race.  The Ka Mamalahoe's Mixed Novice B Crew (center) of Curtis, Hoku, Eli, Shareen, Cheryl and Scott placed 2nd.

APRIL 26, 2008, KE'EHI LAGOON:  Heat, vog and lack of trade winds couldn't keep a record draw of more than 45 race crews from taking part in the annual Alapa Hoe Pre-Season Race at Ke'ehi Lagoon this past Saturday.  Our Ka Mamalahoe home team entered four crews in the five-mile short course from Ke'ehi out to the "Big Channel Outside Buoy" and back.

Leading the way for Ka Mamalahoe was their Mixed Master 40's crew.  Joan, Andy, Mike T, Keala, David and Pam teamed up to take 3rd and an impressive 6th overall out of a field of 45 crews in a time of 49.58. Top crews for the Mix Masters Division were Hawaiian Kanaktion (1st, 47.48), and Ke Ola O' Ke Kai (2nd, 47.54)

Following closely behind our Mixed Masters was our Open Mix crew of Justin, Kui, Dee Dee, Julie, Mike M and Michelle who placed 4th (7th overall), with a time of 50.54.  Hawaiian Kanaktion (46.11), Alapa Hoe (47.28) and New Hope (48.34) were tops in this division.

Today's race was also a break out day for Ka Mamalahoe's Mixed Novice Crew, racing their first race of the season.  The crew of Scott, Cheryl, Shareen, Eli and Hoku were piloted by open steersman Curtis "I have Great Hair" Jamison to a second place finish in a time of 53.33, 26 seconds behind the first place crew from New Hope (53.07).  Winward Kai's mixed B's took 3rd (55.13).

Rounding out the crews for Ka Mamalahoe were our Senior Master Women, who continued their winning ways by taking first in their division (57.51).  Congrads to Char, Christine, Marilyn, Diane and Nola. Note,...the news staff here at mamalahoe.com (me) will be away from April 29 thru May 14.  Coverage will resume on my return.  See below for more photos of today's event...

Beach Boys Dominate North Shore Challenge

Ka Mamalahoe's Senior Master Women push through the surf at this weekends North Shore Challenge.  The crew of Lauree Kaleikau-Gill, Lisa Bento, Irene Torres, Diane Kitterhagen, Christine Tate-Nishi and Joan Couillard finished 2nd in their division

APRIL 19, 2008, HALEIWA, OAHU:  If the Hui Wa'a pre-season is any indication of things to come for the regatta season, then things are looking up for the Waikiki Beach Boys.  Beach Boy men and women crews won convincingly in every major race division they entered at this weekends North Shore Challenge in Haleiwa.  In the short course, a Beach Boy Womens crew ran away from everyone, (including mixed crews) by more than three minutes with a winning time of 1.24.45.  Their nearest competition...was another Beach Boy women crew with time of 1.27.40.  Ka Mamalahoe entered their Senior Master Women crew in this course, finishing runner-up to North Shore in a time of 1.43.26.

The long course also had no change at the top, as the Beach Boys Men won by nearly four minutes over their nearest competition, Manu O Ke Kai. Ka Mamalahoe's Open Men placed 6th.  Most impressive for Ka Mamalahoe on this day was their Senior Master Men.  The crew of Charlie, Mike T, Ed, David, Cliff and Billy, paddled hard, beating out many top open crews (including our own open men), taking first in their division and 7th overall.

Also, in a separate race venue at Ke'ehi Lagoon, Ka Mamalahoe entered a mixed crew to participate in the Kahiau Race sponsored by Keahiakahoe Canoe Club.  More photos below.  For complete results see.... North Shore Challenge and Kahiau Race

Bento Leads Crew to Top 3 Finish at Pu'uloa

March 21, 2008, Keehi Lagoon

Dave, Eddie, Christine, Dee, Lisa, and Scott represented Ka Mamalahoe at this weekends Pu'uloa Pre-Season Race

Ka Mamalahoe got off to a good start to its season by competing in the first pre-season race of the year, the Pu'uloa Pre-Season Race at Ke'ehi Lagoon.  Club rep, and wily steersman, Lisa Bento took charge of a hodge podge mix of veteran and new paddlers to finish 3rd overall (2nd Mix Masters) out of a field of 24 crews.

"We got off to a slow start." said Bento.  "The crew hung tough and we managed to walk up on few crews.  We were close to elite crews from Hawaiian Kanaktion and Waikiki Surf Club, so we're pretty satisfied with our standing."

Next race for Ka Mamalahoe will be the Waikiki Beach Boys race at Magic Island on March 29.
